The Top Bar Hive has the following advantages compared with conventional beehives:
1) Simple structure, no need to lift the box
The horizontal top-bar beehive adopts a top bar design, eliminating the need for a bulky base and internal combs. When inspecting the bee colony, there is no need to move the beehive, making the operation much more convenient.
2) Reduce damage to beehives
Conventional beehives use movable frames, which are convenient for separating honey using centrifuges during honey collection. The horizontal top-bar beehive, however, has no movable bee combs, so during honey collection, the hive needs to be broken open, but this avoids frequent opening of the hive which would disturb the bee colony.
3) Adapt to the natural habits of bees
The bee colonies build their nests along the top bars of the long beehives, which is closer to the natural state and may reduce the stress responses of the bees.
4) Lower cost
The complex frame and base structure of the horizontal top-bar beehive have been eliminated, resulting in lower production and maintenance costs.
